You may have seen it in the press, on the news or on social media – that weightlifting is the best way for women to workout – particularly over 40.
And I’m here to tell you that this is absolutely true.
Since adding women’s weight training classes to our Love Life Ladies timetable, I have seen our members transform their fitness and wellbeing.
The ability to be able to lift weights is not only mentally empowering, giving our ladies a increased sense of confidence. It also has huge health benefits to women – particularly those over 40.
When women reach 40, things start to change:
Body fat becomes harder to shift
Our body shape changes
We become more susceptible to injury and degenerative conditions such as osteoporosis
Certain hormones decrease and fluctuate
We can lose confidence
THIS IS NOT INSURMOUNTABLE and I have seen ladies in their 40s, 50s and beyond become fitter and in better shape than they every have in their adult life.
Here’s how weightlifting helps with this:
1.You will lose body fat and your metabolism will increase
The more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism will work AT ALL TIMES – not just when you are exercising! This means that you will burn more calories at rest. Often, as we get older we find it harder to lose weight. One of the best ways to counteract this is by building lean tissue by doing resistance exercise.
2.You will become stronger and drastically improve your body shape
Whilst it is extremely difficult for women to bulk up from lifting weights without some (ahem) ‘help’…. What weightlifting will do is improve your body composition and increase muscle tone, giving you an improved body shape….
Getting stronger also makes you a lot less dependent on others for daily living! ‘Madam, would you like help carrying that?’ ‘No I’m fine thank you very much’ ; )
3.You will decrease your risk of degenerative conditions such osteoporosis and increase life expectancy
Numerous studies have shown that weight training reduces the risk of osteoporosis. In fact, studies have shown that weight training can increase spinal bone mineral density significantly in 6 months. Fractures, often due low bone density, also drastically reduce life expectancy in women. This is why weight training, coupled with a good diet will stand you in very good stead as you get older!
4.It will improve your mood, reduce stress and help fight depression.
Studies have shown that 10 weeks of weight training can fight depression better than counselling! I can certainly vouch for this as regular weight training has had a significant impact on my mood. I also notice it in our ladies, when I see them grin from ear to ear after one of our Ladies Who Lift sessions!
5.It produces hormones that keep you feeling and looking young
Regular weight training increases the production of human growth hormones which decreases significantly as we get older.
Human growth hormone is described by many as the key to slowing down the ageing process. This is because it can increase muscle mass and improves the appearance of skin, hair and nails. It also reduces the risk of injury, speeds up the metabolism and prevents many serious diseases.
Please don’t think it’s ever too late to benefit from taking up weight training, or that you are not fit enough. We work with complete beginners all the time and have trained women in their 60s and 70s and seen them reap many of the rewards listed above…
I’m my opinion, adding at least a weekly weight training session to your fitness regime is a no brainer if you want to drastically improve your quality of life and counteract the signs of ageing. This is put perfectly by our Linda who has been with us for several years now….
