It’s no secret that as we get older, our body starts to slow down leading to weight gain, poor muscle tone and a variety of other health issues.

This is not insurmountable and plenty of women are in better shape than ever in their 40s, 50s and beyond.


They lift weights….

  1. Weight training is the best type of exercise for fat loss

Muscle is 4 times more metabolically active than fat so helps us burn tons more calories at rest… The more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism will work AT ALL TIMES – not just when you are exercising!

Often, as we get older we find it harder to lose weight. One of the best ways to counteract this is by building lean tissue by doing resistance training.

  1. Weight training improves our body shape.

Muscle also improves our body shape and gives our body a lean and athletic appearance.

Whilst it is extremely difficult for women to bulk up from lifting weights without some (ahem) ‘help’…. What weightlifting will do is improve your body composition and increase muscle tone, giving your body and improved appearance….

  1. Weight training keeps us looking youthful

Weight training also produces Human Growth Hormone!! Human Growth hormone or HGH is the hormone of youthfulness…. It has an important role in fat metabolism, tissue growth and repair, energy levels, bone strength, sexual function and much more … Unfortunately HGH declines significantly after we reach the age of 30… This is one of the main reasons we age, because our body does not produce enough to keep up with the tissue damage that is a part of the ageing process ….

  1. Weight training increases bone density and prevents us getting injured

Stronger muscles improves balance, posture and mobility – all things that decline as we get older. Weight training also increases bone density, preventing fractures and chronic conditions such as osteoporosis.

It goes without saying that both of these things have a serious impact on a person’s health, happiness and quality of life. They can result in chronic pain, long-term disability and decreased mortality.

So why are we not all lifting weights?

Because most of us don’t know where to start and certainly don’t want to be ‘pumping iron’ in a busy, intimidating gym…
